AEGINA became the first of the Greek city-states in history to issue coined money.Each Polis had it’s own form of government,it’s own dinstictive economy & currency.
The inhabitants of Aegina were famous as merchants & seafarers & the city-state was a maritime power in the sixth century.For about 400 years they spread the silver staters,the Greek “Turtles” as commonly known,throughout the Mediterranean,introducing it to many non Greek peoples with whom they came in contact.Turtle coins was found in Italy,Egypt & Persia.
